To say that I'm jealous doesn't begin to cover it. I knew Evy. Not sure about Linda or JoAnne. JoAnne looks familiar. Evy or Evelyn was quite an amazing girl, obsessed with Paul, like so many of us. Evy was part of a network that formed in the summer of 1967 in front of the Warwick Hotel where The Beatles stayed the last two times they toured in NYC. In '67 The Monkees were staying in that hotel. There were hundreds of Monkee fans out front. I went pretty much to protest the fact that the Monkees were daring to stay where the Beatles had during their last 2 American tours. Of Course at this point there would be no more tours, since they decided to focus on recording and Sgt Pepper had just been released. When I got there, I met a girl named Nancy. We got to talking and, as it turned out, she was there for the same reason: To protest The Monkees presence at the Beatles hotel! She informed me that there were a whole bunch of other people there for the same reason and took me over to introduce me. I made several friends, one was one of the few in this Beatle network, named Tommy Sullivan, he became one of the Apple Scruffs. Another was Nancy Walsh, whom I lost touch with. and her friend Linda. There wereSheila and Claudia, a duo from Forest Hills, There was another Joanne, Joanne Pinto, famous for appearing on the start of the Shea Stadium film, short black hair, screaming. There were a few other acquaintances in that group of cream of the crop Beatle fans. One was Janice Jolly, now Janice Bartel, whom I've been friends with since meeting in front of the Warwick for 47 years. She is close friends with Louise Harrison hwere she lives with her playwright husband in Illinois. I remember Evelyn and her bright red hair, and how her mother made her a green jacket that matched the one Paul wore when he and John came to NY in May of 1968 to promote Apple. It was the first time I ever touched a Beatle.--2 actually. I lived in Queens and the above grapevine always passed along whenever a Beatle would be in town. Yes, those of us who were dedicated, would have made great detectives as we could always find out where they would be. This was most exciting in the sixties, when the Beatles were still together. I had many NY adventures that I don't have time to go into here. Clearly, your wonderful lucky experiences prove how much persistence pays off! I love your stories and as a lifelong Beatle fan will always relate to what it's like to stand outside of a myriad of venues, hotels, apartment buildings for hours. Nothing can match the excitement of being a Beatle fan!

Wow Pearl, your post has given me chills…I knew Tommy (gone too soon), and I remember Claudia and Sheils's names as well. I have tried to find Evy, we were good friends for 20+ years, but sadly, even with all of my slightly rusty detective skills, I have not been able to locate her. If you or anyone you know knows where she is, please get back to me, I'd really love to have her back in my family… Leave a Reply. |
